The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) has advocated for gender responsive pedagogy for teachers in Imo State for inclusive classroom learning.

Speaking during the stakeholders workshop on gender responsive pedagogy for teachers in Owerri over the weekend, the Policy Advisor of the coalition, Ahanonu Odinakachi noted, “Quality of education is not only about what we teach, but also about how we teach and whether every child has an equal opportunity to learn, participate, and succeed”.

She said evidence shows that many teachers still face challenges in responding effectively to gender disparities and the diverse learning needs of boys and girls.

“While Nigeria has policies and frameworks that support teacher development and inclusive education, the challenge remains in translating these commitments into practical classroom practice. This workshop therefore provides an important opportunity to bring key institutions around the same table—not simply to discuss the challenges, but to agree on what needs to change and who will do what”.

“For CSACEFA, this workshop is part of our broader commitment to strengthening education systems and ensuring that teachers are adequately supported to provide inclusive and gender-responsive learning environments”.

“The quality of education delivery in Nigeria is significantly influenced by the capacity of teachers to effectively implement the curriculum in inclusive and gender-responsive ways. Evidence across states indicates that many teachers lack the competencies required to address gender disparities, promote inclusive classrooms, and respond to the diverse learning needs of boys and girls”.

“Under the Education Out Loud (EOL) project, CSACEFA is implementing activities aimed at strengthening education systems through policy advocacy and stakeholder engagement”.

“The coalition is advocating for enhanced teachers’ professional development by December 2027—this activity seeks to convene critical national and sub-national stakeholders to drive institutional commitments toward integrating gender-responsive pedagogy into teacher development frameworks”.

The Imo state coordinator of the coalition, Kenneth Amogu noted, “key institutions such as the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and State Education Boards play central roles in teacher training, certification, and professional development. Their collaboration is essential to achieving sustainable impact across the 13 EOL focus states”.

“While several policies and frameworks exist to support teacher development, there is a gap in practical integration of gender-responsive pedagogy (GRP) into teacher training systems. Current efforts are fragmented, with limited coordination between national and state actors.
This workshop is designed to bridge the gap between policy and practice,
provide a unified framework for GRP integration, secure institutional commitments for implementation and establish accountability mechanisms for tracking progress”.
