Speaking on Monday at the 4th edition of the cultural day of Shekina British International Secondary School in Owerri, the Managing Director and Proprietor, Dr. Unegbu, said the introduction of Igbo cultural programmes in schools has been instrumental in keeping the language alive.

“This initiative is designed to integrate cultural heritage into education while promoting Igbo language and traditions,” Dr. Unegbu said. “Our aim is to ensure that the Igbo language not only survives but thrives for generations to come.”

He highlighted that the school dedicates every Friday to speaking Igbo, a practice that allows students from different countries to engage with the language and the culture. According to him, cultural competitions and heritage-focused activities spark interest among children, helping them connect with their roots.

Dr. Unegbu also called for collaboration between educational institutions and government agencies, urging support to improve school infrastructure and facilitate cultural programmes. He stressed that unity among school administrators, teachers, parents, and students is key to sustaining the revival of the language.

“Cultural programmes like this promote Igbo language at the grassroots and contribute to Nigeria’s cultural diversity and unity,” he said.

Prof. Nwankwo noted that blending cultural education with conventional academics helps children appreciate their heritage while gaining modern knowledge.

“Exposing students to cultural festivals and traditional practices ensures that indigenous languages like Igbo remain relevant, vibrant, and central to national identity,” he added.

With Dr. Obinna Unegbu spearheading these initiatives, the Igbo language is reclaiming its place in schools and communities, proving that with dedication and innovative education, it is far from extinction.
