Imo Governor’s Cup: Arsenal Targets West African Golf Spotlight, Attracts 55 Sponsors

The maiden Imo Governor’s Cup has launched Arsenal Golf and Country Club, Obinze, on an ambitious five-year drive to become a leading golf tourism and investment destination in West Africa, with about 55 corporate organisations backing the tournament.

The championship, themed “Swing and Discover the New Imo,” which began on September 8, climaxes on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Arsenal Golf and Country Club, Obinze, Owerri, with its grand finale and prize presentation.

Speaking during a pre-tournament media briefing at the club, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Ogbuagu Ernest Nwapa said the tournament represented the beginning of a new journey for Arsenal Golf and Country Club, anchored on stronger government and corporate partnerships.

“This is a very important day in the life of Arsenal. It is not because this is the first tournament we are having or because we invited clubs from around the country, but because a new journey is starting in Arsenal today,” he said.

Nwapa said the club had set a five-year target to become a preferred golfing destination in Nigeria and West Africa, attracting players, tourists, businesses and major sponsors.

“We want to make a statement, not only to the Imo State community or the South-East, but to Nigeria and even the West African region, that Arsenal, in a few years’ time; we give ourselves five years and here will be a destination players will want to come to and sponsors will be scrambling to sponsor,” he stated.

He attributed the momentum behind the tournament to support from Governor Hope Uzodimma, saying the governor’s seed funding encouraged the organisers to reach out to corporate organisations and partners of the state.

The LOC Chairman disclosed that about 55 sponsors were involved in the tournament, with the banking, oil and gas and other sectors strongly represented, including Renaissance, Zenith Bank, NOVA Bank, Fidelity Bank and IGPES Group.

He said the championship also provides opportunities for business networking and investment, particularly around the state’s gas sector and free trade zone.

According to him, platinum, diamond and gold sponsors would become corporate members of Arsenal Golf and Country Club, giving their top executives access to the facility while building long-term relationships with the club.

Also speaking, Captain of Arsenal Golf and Country Club, Hon. Chike Orjiako, said the tournament had moved beyond sporting competition to become a platform for projecting Imo State’s tourism and economic potential.

“We are not just building a club. We are not just playing a tournament. We are building a club that will bring tourism to Imo State. We are telling the story of Imo through golf, and if we don’t tell that story, nobody will tell the story for us,” Orjiako said.

He said the maiden Governor’s Cup had attracted major corporate institutions whose involvement could develop into long-term relationships rather than one-off sponsorship.

Orjiako added that the club was developing a golf academy aimed at discovering and nurturing young talents, with a pilot partnership involving Shekinah British International School.

According to him, the ultimate objective is to build a golf course capable of standing the test of time, promoting tourism, attracting businesses and providing opportunities for young people to learn the sport.

The club captain also acknowledged the contributions of the Board of Trustees, Local Organising Committee and members towards the development of the facility.

A member of the Board of Trustees, Engr. Charles Ngoka, also commended the progress recorded by the club and recalled the support it received from Governor Uzodimma during the development of its clubhouse.

Ngoka said the governor visited the facility while construction was ongoing, enquired about the club’s needs and subsequently provided assistance towards the project.

He described the Governor’s Cup as an opportunity to draw greater attention to golf and showcase Imo State to a wider audience.

Ngoka commended the club captain and Local Organising Committee for the organisation of the tournament, while urging the media to help project Arsenal Golf and Country Club to the wider golfing community.
