Democracy Day in Nigeria: Between Celebration and the Reality of Insecurity, Hardship, and Unfulfilled Promises By Amb. Chika Uju
As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day, the occasion offers not only a moment of celebration but also a sober reflection on the state of the nation. For many citizens, the ideals of democracy—security, freedom, justice, and improved living standards—remain aspirations rather than daily realities. Persistent insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and the rising cost of living continue to shape the experiences of ordinary Nigerians, raising important questions about how far the nation has truly come on its democratic journey.

Against this backdrop, human rights activist and founder of the Uju Charity and Empowerment Initiative (UCEI), Amb. Chika Uju, reflects on the lived realities of citizens across the country. In this piece, she highlights the pain of families affected by abductions, the fear that grips farming communities, and the struggles faced by young people navigating limited opportunities. She also calls attention to the need for stronger security institutions, accountable governance, and policies that genuinely improve the welfare of the people.
Her message is both a reminder and a call to action: that democracy must be measured not only by elections and political transitions, but by the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of every citizen in Nigeria.
“Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria!
As we mark another Democracy Day, many Nigerians are asking; what exactly are we celebrating when so many challenges continue to confront our nation?
Many of our schoolchildren remain in captivity. Some serving and retired security personnel, police officers, teachers, and other innocent citizens are still in the hands of abductors.
Families continue to live in fear and uncertainty, praying daily for the safe return of their loved ones.
Insecurity has deeply affected our nation. Many people no longer sleep with both eyes closed. Farmers are afraid to go to their farms, contributing to food shortages and the rising cost of living. Unemployment has also pushed some youths into criminal activities due to frustration and lack of opportunities.
For many ordinary Nigerians, the dividends of democracy are yet to be fully realized. Basic necessities such as good roads, quality healthcare, reliable electricity, and affordable living conditions remain major challenges.
Despite being blessed with abundant natural and human resources, many citizens continue to struggle.
As political attention gradually shifts toward the 2027 general elections, we must not lose sight of the pressing issues affecting the lives of Nigerians today. Security, economic growth, job creation, and improved welfare should remain top priorities.
Those involved in sponsoring banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities must be identified, investigated, and prosecuted according to the law. Our security agencies should be adequately funded, equipped, motivated, and properly cared for, as they risk their lives daily in service to the nation and have families who depend on them.
As discussions on State policing continue, it is important that such structures are used to protect lives and property, not to intimidate or oppress innocent citizens. Proper funding, training, accountability, and welfare should be guaranteed.
Whenever I hear about the killings, kidnappings, and violence taking place across our country, my heart bleeds. The fear of the unknown continues to trouble many Nigerians.
May God save our country, strengthen our democracy, and grant peace to our land. May our schoolchildren, teachers, security personnel, and all others still in captivity regain their freedom and return safely to their families.
God bless Nigeria. Amen.
Chika Uju
