Democracy Day: A Day of Reflection and Commitment
By Iwueze Vitalis…

Thursday June 12 2025, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Imo State, gathered in large numbers at the Party Secretariat Owerri to commemorate Democracy Day.
A day deeply etched in the annals of Nigeria’s political history. It was a date that resonated with the struggle for true democratic governance, a tribute to the legendary Chief MKO Abiola GCFR, who paid the ultimate price in his quest to see Nigeria flourish.
The leadership of SDP, under Amb. Ifeanyi Henry Eluwa, stood alongside party members and citizens alike, all visibly moved by the memory of Abiola, a leader who after winning the presidential election in June 1993, was unjustly denied his rightful place due to a military coup.

His sacrifice not only marked a pivotal shift in the democratic landscape of Nigeria but also spotlighted the challenges of governance, security, and economic integrity that still resonate today.
As speeches filled the air, Amb. Eluwa said “Today, we gather not just to celebrate the ideals of democracy but to remember the profound cost at which these ideals were achieved. Chief MKO Abiola’s dream was one of a united and prosperous Nigeria, a dream that we too, aspire to actualize.”
The recent years had illuminated the many hurdles the nation still faced, from widespread poverty and unemployment to a lack of access to quality education and healthcare. These challenges, despite the triumphs Nigeria had made since the return to democracy, called for urgent and impactful solutions.
“The SDP is resolute in its commitment to advocate for better policies,”
“Our focus remains on addressing the narratives of poverty and unemployment, providing a platform for quality education, and ensuring that healthcare is accessible to all Nigerians. We envision a Nigeria where every voice matters, and where transparency and accountability in governance become the norm, not the exception.”
The Imo SDP also expressed heartfelt appreciation for the leadership of Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the National Chairman of the party, along his executive team noting hat their unwavering commitment to upholding the SDP has been instrumental in safeguarding Nigeria democracy framework.
Amb. Eluwa emphasized the critical role that the leadership has played in resisting the tide of political opportunism that threatens to undermine the democratic ideals in the country, by steadfastly rejecting the influence of desperate political shylocks who aim to morph Nigeria into a one-party system, and underscores that the SDP has the necessary strength and resolve to restore the vibrant democratic system that Nigeria rightly deserves.
“To the good people of Imo State and all Nigerians, we must come together in pursuit of a better Nigeria. The challenges we face are not insurmountable, but they require collective effort. We must strengthen our democracy and promote inclusive governance. With unity and determination, we can bring about the change we desire.”

The SDP Imo State reinforced their commitment to being a platform where all Imolites could have a say in governance, urging everyone to actively participate in the political process that shapes their lives.
Amb. Eluwa concluded the day’s events with a heartfelt message. “Let us reflect on our past as we work towards our future. Let us honor the memory of Chief MKO Abiola by dedicating ourselves to the hard work of building a Nigeria characterized by justice, equity, and opportunity for all. Together, we can achieve this, and together, we can be the change.”
