The NUJ National Trustee In charge of zone C South East, Chief Sir Innocent Igwe has appealed to the Federal Government of Nigeria to reconsider the sudden increases in the pump price of petrol and Electricity Tariffs to avoid mass drifting of Nigerians into extreme poverty, and untold hardship.
According to Chief Igwe, the simultaneous unleashing of the two mega policy decisions on Petrol and Electricity which are at the heart of Nigeria’s economic activities and industrialization drive at a period the country is barely striving to exist spells socioeconomic dangers and calls for a more critical re-examination of the decisions, while urging that extreme caution be taken as well as thorough review of the policies.
“I appeal to the Federal Government to reconsider the sudden increases in the pump price of petrol and Electricity Tariffs to avoid the mass drifting of Nigerians into extreme poverty, Unmanageable Unemployment, Hyper inflation and in the overall National interest”
Chief Igwe regretted that the federal government has shown no commitment in bettering the lives of Nigerians through its policies in recent times adding that the N30,000 minimum wage is yet to be paid in most of the Nigerian Federating units hence the high rate of poverty in the land.
“At a time the Federal Government is yet to release and Apply any stimulus package in the various sectors of the Economy already yearning for financial breath as evident in the flurry of industrial Actions and Unrest while the long Approved N30,000 minimum wage is yet to be paid in most of the Nigerian Federating units, with 27.1% National Unemployment and over 13% inflation, such increases are tantamount to a deadly blow on the welfare of the masses who have been confined to the dregs of world poverty indexes”
The NUJ National Trustee called on the All Progressive Congress, APC led federal government of Muhammadu Buhari to come to the rescue of Nigerians as soon as possible to save dying souls because of prevalent difficulty.
“If anything the Federal Government should prevail on the other tiers of Government and employers of labor to fully implement the National minimum wage as well as ensure regular payment of salaries and pension in sincerity of Governance and in sympathy with the farmished masses most of who absolutely depend on the workers for their survival”
“It is obvious that Nigerians cannot afford the increases at this time, especially as they are still crawling out of the COVID-19 pandemic devastations among other socioeconomic paralyses”
“I therefore call on President Muhammadu Buhari to reconsider the decisions to save Nigerians and the nation from socioeconomic crises”
