Imo SWAN Pays Tribute to Football Icon Henry Nwosu as Burial Plans Emerge
The Imo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has paid tribute to late Nigerian football legend Henry Nwosu, describing him as a symbol of excellence whose influence shaped generations of players.
The association also commended his contributions to Nigerian football following the release of his burial arrangements.
Beyond the tribute, details of his funeral programme have been released by the family, outlining a week-long series of events in his honour across Lagos and Imo State, beginning with a Night of Tributes and concluding with a thanksgiving service.

The family of Henry Onyemanze Nwosu announced that a Night of Tributes will hold on June 1, 2026, at Saint Finbarr’s College from 4pm to 7pm.
A Service of Songs is scheduled for June 4 in Umukwoma Umuorie-Naze, Owerri, while a commemorative match between Lagos Legends and Imo Legends will take place on June 5 at Dan Anyiam Stadium by 3pm.
Funeral rites will continue on June 6 with lying-in-state before a funeral mass at his country home in Umukwoma, Naze, after which interment will follow immediately. A thanksgiving service will round off the ceremonies on June 7 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church by 10am.
In a press release signed by Secretary Tunde Liadi with the approval of Chairman Cosmos Chukwuemeka, SWAN Imo described Nwosu as “fondly remembered as the youngest member of Nigeria’s victorious 1980 AFCON squad and one of the country’s finest midfielders whose creativity and composure helped shape a golden era for Nigerian football.”
The statement added that his achievements with Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now Heartland FC, “cemented his place as a household name in domestic football where he later served as a coach and mentor to young players.”
It further noted that he remained active in football development until his passing, serving in various capacities including as a board member of Heartland FC and coach with Nigeria’s U-17 team.
Imo SWAN described him as “a humble patriot, respected football legend and symbol of dedication whose legacy will continue to inspire Nigerian sports,” and extended condolences to his family, former teammates and the Nigeria Football Federation, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
