FEDPONEK Rector’s Cup Kicks Off in Earnest as Mass Comm Department, Others Showcase Talents, Goals

The Rector’s Football Competition of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri has kick started in the renowned institution.
The annual football competition which kicked off 28th August, 2019 has so far recorded over 15 goals from 6 matches as the School stadium hosted four(4) spectacular and scintillating matches yesterday (29th August) with the teammates all busy in their various wings trading hard and tough tackles to have an edge over their opponents.

The first match for the day between Department of Architecture and Purchasing & Supply witnessed a 1-1 draw. A free kick from Lucky in the 22nd minute was converted to put the Archy boys ahead. In the 51st minute, a penalty was awarded to Purchasing & Supply and was taken by Malcom who scored to make it 1-1. The regulation time ended 1-1 and Purchasing & Supply carried the day in a 4:2 penalty shootout. The Goalkeeper- Michael Brown in the game made a wonderful penalty save for his team anchor their winning.

The second match was between team Taxation department and Pharmaceutical technology department. The game was very exciting as there was display of skills from both sides. The pharmaceutical technology took the lead in the 15th Minute by KC and was equalised almost immediately in the 17th minute with a sharp strike from Ezinna of Taxation Department.

The Taxation boys went ahead to take the lead in the 30th minute of the game and the 2nd half recorded no goals as the game ended 2-1 in favour of Taxation Department.
The game between the Department of Mass communication and Mechatronics initially saw the Mass-Comm team walked into the pitch in a sober mood owing to the lost of one of their lecturers in person of Mr Johnson Ekpomo as a minute silence was observed for the deceased lecturer.

In the 11th minute of the match, a penalty kick was awarded to Mass communication department which was missed by Okoronkwo Paschal. However he made it up for his team as he put them ahead with a wonderful strike in the 19th minute.
The 1st half ended 1:0 in favour of Mass Comm and in the 60th minute, Okoronkwo in Jersey No 10 made it a brace with yet another spectacular strike.

The game was full of entertainment and in the 76th minute, a wonderful volley by Paschal found the back of the net making it 3:0 to seal the victory for Mass Communication Department.
As a cheering routine, the Head of Mass Communication Department, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Mrs Sheba Garbson who watch her team play skilfully alongside other executives of the department expressed joy over the victory of the Mass Communication team and prayed they lift the trophy at the end of the tournament.

The Department is renowned for doing well in the Rector’s Football Competition, as the department lifted the trophy 🏆 for both Male and Female category in the year 2017, but despite the backdrop that the Female team was disqualified in 2018 as well as the Male team could not lift it same year, all other team sees Mass Communication as the biggest threat in the annual tournament.

Another match that went down today between the department of Arts and Designs Technology and Public Administration featured a Coach who doubles as a player and as same time the Sports Director of Team Arts and Design, in the person of Chizimuzor Collins but his soccer talents and skills could not see his team through to the next round as the Administrators thrashed his teamside three(3) Goals to Nil.
