Nigeria@59: There is Nothing Worth Celebrating, We are Still Far Behind – Justin Nnadika.

As October 1 marks the Independence Day anniversary of Nigeria, the citizens has continued to bare their minds on the state of the nation since independence in 1960.

While a cross section of Nigerians thank God for a new year for the country as well as pray for blessing , many other Nigerians has frowned at the hype of the anniversary and loud celebrations in that regard stating that Nigeria is old enough at 59 to celebrate more that it is doing because there are a lot to be put in place before the celebrations.

In the foregoing, a journalist and social commentator in Imo state, Mr Justin Nnadika has joined in the hot discuss across the country whether to or not celebrate the Nation’s Independence Day in the face of the numerous backdrops.

Read His Reactions:

Today, Nigeria marks her 59th year as an independent nation.

Being the most populous black nation and giant of Africa, Nigeria ought to be an envious nation by other African countries and even the western world in all ramifications as we can proudly boast of natural endowments but today the reverse is the case because our leaders have woefully failed to do the needful and their insensitive actions and inactions keeps telling on the citizenry.

What really are Nigerians celebrating at 59? That is a million question begging for an answer. Are we celebrating Insecurity, Corruption, Lack of Job, Poor Road network etc
Insecurity is one the biggest challenges the country is facing.

In the face of all these challenges with the government folding it’s hands, little wonder why Late Professor Chinua Achebe in his project work entitled “The Trouble with Nigeria” said : There is nothing wrong with the Nigerian Character, nothing wrong with the Land, Climate, Water, Air or anything else. The Nigerian problem is the Willingness or inability of its leaders to rise to their responsibilities, to the challenge of personal example which is the hallmark of true leadership.

Nigerians can no longer go to sleep with their two eyes closed. There is always a case of kidnapping on daily basis across the country especially on Abuja – Kaduna express way which happens almost everyday.

Farmers and Herdsmen clash has been a recurring decimal with no effort on the part of the government to stop the menace. The only solution proffered was the RUGA settlement which was outrightly kicked away by Nigerians as they saw it as a means to cede their ancestorial lands to Fulanis.

Destruction of lives and property has been the order of the day as lives of Nigerians are no longer valued even in diaspora. Just recently in South Africa, Nigerians were slaughtered like chickens, their shops and goods worth millions of naira burnt. Now the question is if our lives is not valued and secured in our own country, how would the outside world value it?

On the issue of Job, every year, we have thousands of people as graduates coming out of school with no job opportunity available. Even the working class are poorly paid considering the state of the economy. Last year, the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, etc staged protests over increment of minimum wage which the Federal government agreed to but till this moment, it is yet to be implemented.

In all fairness, with no form of bias, I see nothing worth celebrating.
