NDLEA Charges Federal Poly Nekede Students Against Drug Abuse

Students of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, have been charged to say no to drug abuse in order to gain academic success and become fruitful citizens.

The charge for students to abstain from drug abuse to be useful in their endeavors, was given by the Imo State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Mr Nse J. Inam, during a One Day Workshop/Talent Hunt in Partnership with NDLEA, organized by the Directorate of Welfare and Social Responsibility in partnership with NDLEA, held on Tuesday, at the 500 Capacity Auditorium, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri.

Inam who maintained that all crime committed was as a result of drug abuse influence, hence appealed to youths to “shun illicit drug intake so that you become responsible to make your community proud”.

Mrs Olugu Kalu Chinyere, Deputy Commander, Admin/Logistics, Mrs Promise Nwamkpa Lucy, Staff Officer, Drug Demand Reduction and Mr Uche Sampson, PRO accompanied the NDLEA State Commender to the seminar.

The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Engr Dr Michael Chidiebere Arimanwarging the students to do away with illegal drug intake so that they achieve academic excellence to enable them brighten their future, said the enlightenment program was germane and timely.

“Considering the level of crime and insecurity shrouding the society. Unfortunately, most of these crimes are attributed to drug abuse. Therefore, the need to address the issue of drug abuse cannot be over- emphasized”, Engr Arimanwa added.

Earlier, in her address of welcome, Director of Welfare and Social Responsibility, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Dr Mrs Basilia Igbokwe, enjoined the participants to “note that drug abuse can never do any good to anybody. It is a silent killer and has contributed to 70% of crimes in the nation. In fact, a number of our friends are misguided and rendered useless by drugs”.

According to Igbokwe, “it is against this backdrop that the Directorate, with the approval of the Rector, decided to work in collaboration with experts in the fight against drugs, to educate us on the need to say no to drug abuse”, thanking NDLEA for coming to the workshop which she classified as stimulating, educative and informative.

The workshop which also featured Talent Hunt among the students of the Polytechnic, was flagged off by the Rector, Engr Dr Michael Chidiebere Arimanwa with the Deputy Rector, Administration, Dr Mrs Antonia Nwosu and other lecturers instructing students who use offensive drugs to turn a new leaf to live healthy and wealthy.
