Human Rights: Nigeria And Her Citizens
By John Ebiye
The declaration of Human rights by the United Nations includes that People should have the right of privacy, health and right of equality before the law as well as the right to freedom of expression and freedom from discrimination and violence including torture.
It is disheartening that most part of African countries especially Nigeria is far from observing these rights.
Lesbian, Gay , Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) have taken over and is being practiced in some African countries.
These practices are not only forbidden by law but the society see it as a taboo and course in these African countries especially Nigeria.
Those who practiced it in Nigeria are persecuted by law, they usually go into hiding to avoid being caught by the people who are ready to mob such people in public especially when the police is not around.
On a higher level, people of such Orientation do not show or express their character in public or else they will be brutally confronted by their people.
Lately, homosexuality has been making headlines in most Nigerian Newspapers.
Recently, the Nigerian Police stormed a night Club suspected to be harbouring gay People and about forty seven people were arrested and detained, It is unclear, if all of them were released.
A report came that few of them could not justify their sexual orientation due to their uncompromising positions during the time of arrest. The likes of Bobrisky, Joseph Obi, Juliana Isidor and others are still on the run.
The case of Juliana Isidor was reported as it was alleged that she escaped detention after she was caught in a scenario that lead to the death of friend who believed in homosexuality.
Homosexuality will never gain popularity as most people see it as a traditional law being backed by the Government.
The only means of survival without prison sentence if one practice gay is when the person do such outside the country.
This is because some western Countries have legalized the practice in their countries.
The law that criminalise same sex practices in Nigeria was signed into law by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, by signing the law, it has come to stay and anyone doing so in Nigeria should face the full weight of the law if caught .
