Imo accident: Sen. Achonu condoles with victims’ families, residents

Sen. Athan Achonu has condoled with families of victims of a fatal accident in Owerri, the Imo capital, which claimed six lives.

This is contained in a release signed by Achonu’s Media Adviser, Mr Chibuikem Diala, made available to newsmen in Owerri, on Monday.

Our correspondent reports that police spokesman in Imo, ASP Henry Okoye, in a release on Sunday, said the road crash occurred at the ever busy Imo State University junction, Okigwe road , Owerri.

He said that a citizen reported to the police that the accident, involving a Mack truck and four mini buses, occurred at about 7.00pm, leaving six persons , including a lecturer of the university, dead and many others, injured.

Achonu expressed deep shock at the news and expressed his condolences to the immediate families of victims of the tragic incident.

“I am deeply pained knowing that the magnitude of this tragedy will no doubt affect many families whose lives depend on the departed.

“I wish speedy recovery to those with various degrees of injury recieving treatment at the hospital, and I pray the good Lord to heal them according to his riches in glory.

“In the Spirit of Pentecost Sunday which we celebrate today, I pray that the Holy Spirit will heal the hearts of these families and indeed all well meaning Imolites and comfort them in the fire of His love! “, he said.

He however called on road safety departments, agencies and leaders in government to awaken to the crucial duty of ensuring safe roads.

“From the road worthiness of vehicles, state of road infrastructure, to the mental health of drivers and indeed every road user, efforts must be re-doubled to bring sanctity and sanity to our roads “, he said.
