Women are charged to stand up to the challenges and expectations of political participation as well as engagements across the country as a nonprofit and nongovernmental organization known as the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), Imo state Chapter advocates for Women’s global Rights in politics so as to fully empower them to vote and be voted for in all elections.
The Imo State Chairperson of NILOWV, Hon. Barr. (Mrs) Martha Aladum who doubles as the PDP candidate for Ideato South State Constituency, made the call alongside his Executive members in an interactive session with press men on Wednesday, Feburary 22, 2023.
Hon. Aladum noted that women were grossly marginalized in the electoral process of voting and being voted for over the years in the country hence the committed advocacy to reawaken women to take up their rightful places in the scheme of politics, adding that women are agents of change who always put up human face in their relationship with members of the society.

“NILOWV is a nonpolitical, nonpartisan, and a nongovernmental Initiative/Organization in all the states of the Federation including Federal capital territory, Abuja. NILOWV was founded 25 years ago and we have Dr Mrs Esther Udenyi as our National President”
The well grounded legal personality stressed that “when a woman is given elective power, she serves better as they are more economical, focused and straightforward in politics; in sharp contrast with their male counterparts”, while noting that NILOWV have been in the forefront of encouraging, enlightening and empowering women to be politically relevant, actively engaged and given a sense of belonging.

“They should participate by voting in good governance and supporting their fellow women”
She however encouraged women contestants as well as the female masses to be steadfast and courageous to stand for elections as gone are the days when women are relegated to the background on excuses that they have nothing to offer politically.

“Women are called to use their numerical strength in all the states to change the narrative of bad governance by voting positively and encouraging the women that are out to participate and get them into power”

Barr Aladum who noted that in a legislative era, women would do better Advocacy for gender issues, child legislations, people oriented and far reaching Constituency projects prayed for gender equality and women inclusiveness in politics while Preaching for less violence to further allow women to participate fully without flex of muscles that have characterized the processes involving men.

In the foregoing, NILOWV Imo state Chapter pointed out the challenges of the league as a “lack of funds, lack of wide sensitization” and called on the media to partner with them to project the league so as to achieve it sole aim of “empowering women politically and economically”
“The league is calling on media to give visibility as well as fair playing ground to women as have granted the men especially during electioneering periods; as we try our best to create more awareness to empower, train and educate women to participate in political matters as political terrain is not an easy thing”
