A renowned Philanthropist and technocrat, Tobechukwu Justice Ehirim popularly known as TJ Ehirim has bemoaned the high cost of politics and subsequent political apathy in the country while urging Nigeran youths, especially Imo youths to stop shying away from politics and the electioneering process, noting that it is the only way they can change the narrative of bad governance across the country.

Ehirim who decried the nonchalant attitude of the youths and people of South East in the registration and collection of Voters’ Cards while speaking to news men at a conference in Abuja, recently, stressed that the main problems in the electoral system of the country is not from the electoral umpire but from the youths who have decided not to participate as well as know the workings in the elections for fear of the unknown thereby leaving bad leaders in power over time.

“That despite the efforts of INEC to encourage the youths to come and register, you find out that many people are not registering; they did continuous voters registration and even extended the dates but when you look at the number of people that are collecting, you will find out that it is still very low”

He advised the youths to take their future into their hands in order to actualize both their individual and collective dreams of a better society through mass interest and participation in the process.

The technocrat noted that victory in elections is by number and full participation and as such urged the youths who makes up the largest number of the country’s population to leverage on their numerical strength, might, and age to change the status quo.

“That’s the main essence of the conference. Many of the youths have grown apathy and I tell them that that is not the best decision towards these processes, we are telling them that we must participate because election is about number”

“Go and use your youth, your energy, your age, your might and Number to vote out those that you don’t want as well as vote in those people that you want that can serve you”

While noting the reasons for youths apathy, youth restiveness and insecurity across boards as unsatisfactory state of the people’s mind about governance, Chief TJ Ehirim added that the youths are afraid that their inputs are not being taken into consideration hence works towards leaving the country for greener pastures.

He stressed that “the youths must come in, register and participate and be part of the processes even in the parties so as to be part of decision making”

The intellectual and erudite don further advised leaders of political parties to cut down the cost of interest forms in the parties so as to encourage mass participation of the youths, streesing that not all youths are well engaged to foot the whole bills of joining, participating and roundly running for positions hence their challenges ought be considered in all decisions of the parties.

In Imo for instance, there are some youths who are calling on party leaderships to reduce the amount of money they are using to pick forms.

“Some of the youths may be very privileged like some of us who are educated, have worked enough to have enough money but not all of them can have enough money”

He said “Imo youths love APGA so much but they are not able to express themselves because they feel that the amount of money they are asking them to come and participate with is too high” but expressed optimism that the leadership of the party will take heed as well as take the best decisions to give all a fair playing ground, adding that the emergency of youths in politics turns things around for good.

“The election of Prof. Soludo is causing Tsunami in Anambra because of his ‘youthness’ and developmental strides in both private and public sector especially the banking sector even while in school”.

“Prof Charles Soludo is one of the best brains; Eastern Nigeria is so blessed with a good number of such people but they are afraid to come out and participate”.

TJ Ehirim enjoined all youths to get involved in the process of electing their leaders as well as being elected as “they cannot be Prof Soludo by running away but can be by participating”

“To tell you the truth, Prof Charles Soludo has not even started running the government but the Anambra people are happy and expectant of good tidings as they are supporting him and that is why we want the youths to come on board, so that when they come in and participate they can then become that good leaders expected of them.
