A Communique issued at the end of the Congress of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Imo State Council, held at NUJ New Secretariat, New Owerri, on Friday, 3rd February , 2023.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Imo State Council led by Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma, at a well-attended inaugural Congress resolved as follows:
- Congress commended the State Government for sponsoring a-one-day professional development workshop for practising journalists in the state, describing it as the first of its kind.
- Congress condemned in it’s entirety the mindless killings of people in the state for whatever reasons especially the recent gruesome and deliberate murder of a Customary Court Chairman at Ejemekwuru in Oguta Local Government Area, of the state,Mr Nnaemeka Ugboma.
- Congress decried the man-made hardship in the state with regard to the high cost of petroleum products culminating in skyrocketing prices of food items, in addition to banks’ inefficient services to customers in dispensing the new Naira notes, and called on the Government to intervene to ameliorate the people’s sufferings. It also condemned the exorbitant rates charged by Point of Sales (POS) operators.
- Congress commended the new Council Chairman, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma on his emergence, even as it doffed its hat for Chief Christopher Akaraonye over his patience and sacrifice in sustaining the council during his tenure.
- Congress charged members to be actively involved in their chapels and pay their check-off dues regularly.
It warned that any chapel that falls short of its responsibilities to the union would be denied of its deserved privileges. - Congress appealed to members of the union to discard their differences and come together to enable us build a united body for the good of all concerned.
- Congress also commended resolutions adopted at the National Special Delegates Conference in Kano, in respect to the reviewed NUJ Constitution, and pledged total support and commitment to the provisions of the amended Constitution.
