Okoro Makes History with Back-to-Back Imo SWAN Heartland Player of the Month Awards
Striker Joel Okoro has been voted the Imo SWAN Heartland FC Player of the Month for January 2026, securing the honour for the second consecutive time after previously emerging winner in December 2025.
In a press statement worded by the scribe of Imo SWAN, Tunde Liadi said the award was decided by members of the association which has Cosmos Chukwuemeka as its Chairman.
Okoro triumphed in a closely contested poll ahead of goalkeeper Jasper David Ezra to set a new milestone at the club.
With the victory, the Ebonyi-born forward becomes the first Heartland FC player to win the monthly accolade back-to-back. While former striker Suraju Lawal claimed the award twice last season, he did not achieve consecutive wins. Okoro’s growing influence at the club continues to underline his importance to the Naze Millionaires’ attacking set-up this campaign.
In January, Okoro featured prominently in all three matches played by Heartland. He scored the second goal in the club’s spirited 3–1 comeback victory away to Abia Comets and consistently threatened opposition defences throughout the month. Beyond his goal, he created three clear goal-scoring chances and recorded an impressive 50 percent shot accuracy, highlighting both creativity and clinical edge in the final third.

Goalkeeper Ezra, who finished as runner-up, also enjoyed an outstanding month. Making his debut, he produced three crucial saves in the 3–1 away win to help secure Heartland’s first away victory of the season against Abia Comets. He further kept a clean sheet in a goalless home draw against Beyond Limits FC and was between the sticks in the narrow 2–1 defeat away to Smart City. Striker Hadi Mohammed was the third nominee after scoring Heartland’s only goal — from the penalty spot — in the 2–1 loss to Smart City and featuring in all three fixtures.
Despite strong competition, Okoro’s all-round attacking impact, consistency across matches, and decisive contribution in the key away victory in Aba ultimately swayed the votes in his favour.
He now has four goals for Heartland this season, including one in January, and will be officially presented with the award at halftime during the team’s next home fixture against Abia Comets next Saturday.
