OGSSOAA celebrates International Women’s Day, calls for greater action on gender equality

The Owerri Girls’ Secondary School Owerri Alumnae Association (OGSSOAA) joined the global community in celebrating the 2026 International Women’s Day with a strong call for empowerment, justice and concrete action for women and girls.

The event, held under the theme “Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls,” brought together alumnae from across Nigeria and the diaspora to celebrate the achievements of women while addressing the challenges they continue to face in society.

A major highlight of the celebration was the presence of the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, who served as the Special Guest of Honour and a proud member of the association.

In her address, Ekomaru highlighted the critical contributions of women to societal development and emphasized the need to continue advancing gender equality. She acknowledged the challenges women face, including balancing career and family life, abusive relationships and financial dependency.

The deputy governor commended the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for promoting women’s participation in governance and providing opportunities for women in his administration.

She also praised the First Lady of the state, Barr. Chioma Hope Uzodimma, for her continued encouragement and support for women and girls.
Ekomaru urged women to push boundaries, break barriers and remain steadfast in their values while striving to create a more inclusive and thriving society.

Also present at the event was the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare in Imo State, Hon. Nkechinyere Ugwu, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to policies that support the welfare and advancement of women and girls.

Two distinguished keynote speakers, Noble Lady Professor Viola Onwuliri, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Education, and Senator Betty Apiafi, also delivered thought-provoking presentations.

Onwuliri emphasized the importance of justice and decisive action in addressing gender inequality. Drawing from her experiences in public service, she stressed the need for mentorship, educational support and the creation of safe environments that enable women and girls to thrive.

She encouraged women to confront discrimination, pursue excellence with discipline and integrity, and use their leadership positions to uplift others.

Apiafi, in her remarks, highlighted the need to recognize and protect women’s rights while addressing laws and cultural practices that hinder progress. She commended the alumnae for their commitment to investing in their alma mater and nurturing future generations.

She also stressed the importance of mentorship, collaboration and self-care, urging women to support one another and embrace the philosophy of “giving to gain” for broader societal impact.

During the programme, several alumnae leaders shared inspiring messages of resilience and determination.

Dr. Pearl Onukwugha encouraged women to take charge and drive change by deploying inner strength, getting involved in organizations and cultivating resilience. She noted that change begins with mindset and urged women to create awareness, educate young girls on their rights and train boys to become responsible men.

A representative of the Canada branch, Mrs. Chinyere, also shared empowering insights, urging women to discover what works for them, understand their environment, avoid toxic spaces and take charge of their lives.

Some alumnae leaders also shared messages on overcoming obstacles.
Olive Ngozi-Amuzuo, President of the Owerri (Home) Branch, said overcoming obstacles builds strength, wisdom and confidence, turning challenges into stepping stones toward success.

Vicky Nwanebu, President of the Port Harcourt Branch, emphasized that success is attainable when women maintain the right mindset and take goal-driven actions.

Ogechi Assumpta Obinna, President of the Enugu (042) Chapter, noted that true strength lies in using shared resilience to dismantle barriers and uplift other women.

Dr. Ogechi Okafor, President of the Abuja Branch, said with a positive mindset, perseverance and resilience, women can overcome every obstacle.

Lady Lynda Chuma-Osuebi (née Akagha), Acting President of the Lagos Branch, encouraged women to keep moving forward and never give up.

Mrs. Digna Ibeh, President of the United Kingdom Branch, urged women to remain strong, encouraged and steadfast in faith.

Mrs. Chinwe Affam, President of the Canada Branch, advised women to remain determined and continue pushing forward with resilience and purpose.

Pastor Lilian Ajah, President of the Jos Branch, encouraged women to embrace obstacles as experiences and tackle them with positivity while remaining focused on their goals.

The celebration also showcased unity among OGSSOAA branches worldwide, with members from Enugu, Abuja, Lagos, the United Kingdom, Canada and Jos sharing colourful group photographs and highlighting community service initiatives carried out in their respective locations.

In her closing remarks, the National President of the association, Dr. Chioma Chidinma George-Anokwuru, said the gathering reaffirmed the alumnae’s collective commitment to inspiring and empowering women across generations.
She noted that through unity, mentorship and purposeful action, women can continue to unlock their potential and shape a better future for society.
