NUJ South East Clamours for LG autonomy, calls on FG to be alive to Infrastructural Devt.
The State Houses of Assembly in the South East zone are called upon to support voting in favour of local government financial/administrative autonomy in the on going constitutional amendment to strengthen that tier of government for more productivity.
This is contained in a communiqué at the end of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Zone C South East meeting held at Press Centre, Abia State.
It wants the Federal Government to conclude processes of nomination and inauguration of INEC Commissioner from the zone without further delay.
The Communiqué which condemned continuous killing of innocent citizens by suspected herdsmen across the country, charged the security agencies to rise up to the challenge and decried the incessant harassment, intimidation and arrest of journalists by security agencies in the course of discharging their statutory duties.
It also condemned the bill proposing death penalty for hate speech offenders by the National Assembly, and called for immediate withdrawal of the bill.
The NUJ South East urged Federal Government contractors handling projects across the zone to expedite action especially road projects as a result of deplorable State of the roads before the onset of heavy rains, and called on the Government at all levels to invest in construction of more irrigation/dams to boost food production/sufficiency across the zones.
The Zonal Executive Meeting in a special way commended the Governor of Abia STATE, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu for his intervention on critical infrastructure projects in the State as well as applauded the Abia State Government for promoting small and medium industries/locally made goods and human capacity building of youths in the State.
