INEC To Commence Physical Voter Registration July 19

The Imo Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Francis Ezeonu, has announced that the physical continuous voter registration exercise (CVR) will commence on July 19.

He disclosed this while briefing journalists in Owerri on Thursday.

Ezeonu said that the exercise would start at INEC state and local government offices first and continue at other centres at a later date.

The commissioner said the commencement of the exercise was delayed as a result of the security challenges across the country.

He said that although the attacks on INEC offices across the country had stopped, yet the commission was still worried about the threats they could pose to registrants.

He said that the online registration would also start same date.

Ezeonu said that the online portal was introduced to improve the operational strategy of the commission and reduce inconvenience on voters.

He said that more than 114,000 accounts have been created in the online registration portal with no fewer than 92,000 applications since it commenced on June 28.

The REC said that the portal was designed to precede the CVR to make new polling units available to voters.

He said the exercise had been completed while old and new polling unit details have been published at the INEC website.

Ezeonu, therefore, warned all those who did not fall in the criteria of eligible registrants not to join in the exercise.
