WHO Condemns Rumours over Army Immunization Programme
The World Health Organisation and Government says its attention has been drawn to the rumour going rounds in the news and social media by suspected IPOB members and opposition parties that some people in Army uniforms are injecting school pupils and students with dangerous substances in parts of Anambra State; hence has called on parents to disregard the rumour and allow their children and wards to return to school and continue with their academic pursuits as government is on top of the situation.
The Imo State Co-ordinator of the World Health Organization Dr. Sebastine Okwu has condemned the rumour of unknown military personnel giving harmful Vaccine to students and pupils in schools in the state.
In an interview with News men on the issue, Dr. Okwu said that the rumour may have emanated from a medical outreach being organized by the 82 Division of the Nigeria Army Enugu.
He said the WHO was working closely with government and urged the public not to panic but to be watchful stressing that such panic could escalate and expose children to danger.
Speaking also, the state Immunization Officer, Mr. David Onyewuchi said there was no immunization campaign of any sort in the state.
Mr. Onyewuchi said that investigations from the 27 local government area indicate no immunization in any health facility in the local government areas.
He urged parents and guardians to disregard the rumour and allow their children go back to school.
The state Cold Chain Officer Mr. Athanasius Adirinwune said that apart from routine immunization vaccines, no other type of vaccine has moved out of his office to any health facility in the state.
He therefore advised the public not reject routine immunization that many come in the nearest future.
