Road Safety: FRSC, Bet9ja Imo state Empowers 110 Motorcycle Riders in Imo Communities

In calculated measures to checkmate road mishaps in society, the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Imo State Sector Command in conjunction with Bet9ja Imo state on Saturday July 27, 2024 empowered One Hundred and Ten (110) motorcycle riders around Nekede, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) and Ihiagwa axis of Owerri West local government area with safety helmets and reflective jackets.
The Safety programme with the theme “Promoting Safe Transportation For Motorcycle Operations in Imo state” was said to be a pilot programme billed to run across the Twenty Seven (27) local government areas of the state.
Accompanying the safety equipments are security and identification numbers inscribed on them to help fight insecurity and proliferation of the unknown riders who cause problems in the locality.
The beneficiaries of the humanitarian gesture accordimg to the organizers, were drawn from registered Motorcycle spots and associations across the communities irrespective of their state of origin.
The all important security awareness and road safety- guided ceremony attracted Officials and operatives of the Department of State Security, DSS, the Military, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC as well as personnel of the FRSC among other sister security agencies in the state who took turns to educate the motorcyclists on the need to completely wear the safety measures at all times.
In his keynote address at the empowerment programme, the Corp Commandant of FRSC Imo state Sector Command, Evaristus Ebeniro emphasized the need for all the riders to be security conscious at all times, create means of identification and be their brother’s keeper to help smoke out criminal elements operating in the area in the guise of motorcyclists.
He advised them to embrace all safety tips from the programme to stay alive for their families.
In her Welcome Address, the State Coordinator of FRSC Special Marshals, Dr. Happiness Ikechukwu said the the donation was timely; coming during the rainy season when the roads are slippery among other hazards hence needs more cautious measures while plying them.
She called on the motorcyclists popularly described as “exposed road users” to always make use of their safety equipments and be appreciative to the Donor who meant well for them and families hence had shown capacity in that regard.
“Think Safety, Drive Satefy and Act Safety”, Dr Happiness added.
Delivering his keynote address, the Chief sponsor of the empowerment programme, Dr Obinna Unegbu said the initiative was aimed at giving back not only to his domain (community) but the society at large to promote safety on the roads as well as checkmate insecurity in the area.
Dr Unegbu charged the cyclists to ensure the security and identification numbers are put to use while promising even distribution of the safety materials to all captured motorcycle operators.
He assured the people of his commitment to continually interface and partner with stakeholders and agencies to ensure development in the community.
Dr Obinna Unegbu however seized the opportunity to thank all stakeholders who made the initiative a success, adding that more partnership are underway.
The representatives of the Department of State Security, DSS. the military, Civil Defence all advised the people to always say something Whenever and wherever they see anything
The beneficiaries of the empowerment, including Mr Sunday Ukeh expressed joy for the kind gesture and prayed God to continue to bless and protect the donor.
They said the gifts would go a long way ensure their safety, security and easy identification of their members as well as criminal elements on the road.
The height of the programme was the donation of the safety helmets and Reflective jackets, demonstrations, interactive and photoshoot session.
