Ohanaeze youths mourn victims of Enugu tanker explosion

The South-south youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has expressed sadness over the fuel tanker explosion, which caused the death of several people, and injured many in Enugu state.

The Coordinator of the youth wing, Chief Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, said this in a statement which he signed and made available to newsmen in Owerri, on Monday.

Our correspondent reports that the horrific incident occurred on Saturday, on 9th Mile 82 Division Expressway, Ugwuonyeama section, when a truck loaded with Premium Motor Spirit collided with some vehicles and erupted in flames, killing people.

Arthur condoled with the families of the victims as well as the government and people of Enugu State, and prayed God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

He also stressed the need for relevant authorities to provide safety measures and educate citizens to prevent such tragedies in the future.

He urged relevant government agencies to provide relief materials to the bereaved and survivors.

He further recommended that heavy duty vehicles be restricted to night journeys when there are less passenger vehicles and pedestrians on the roads.

This, he said, would help forestall recurrence and further strengthen the confidence of road users.

“ Ohanaeze youths heartily sympathize with all those who were either got injured or lost loved ones in the unfortunate incident.

“ We urge the Federal Government to take urgent action to address the deplorable state of our roads especially the 9th mile expressway to help prevent such tragedies in the future.

“ We however recommend that movement of heavy duty vehicles be restricted to the night time, to help reduce the possibility of recurrence”, he said.
