National Museum Partners Imo Govt To Mark 2023 International Museum Day Celebration

National Museum, Owerri in collaboration with Imo State Ministry of Culture and Creative Arts will join their counterparts all over the world to mark the 2023 International Museum Day on Thursday, 18 May 2023.

The Curator of the National Museum Owerri, Chamberlain Amadi Nwosu disclosed this in a press release toward marking the day.

According to the release, this is a day set aside by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to interface with the public, to appraise Museums’ contributions to society.

“Every 18th of May is celebrated globally as International Museum Day”

“The theme for the 2023 International Museum Day celebration is MUSEUMS, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND WELL- BEING.
This theme is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations which is aimed at transforming the world and making it a better place for all”

“The Museum as an institution in the service of society is a key stakeholder in the transformation agenda of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
and therefore at the forefront of the campaign; using its platforms and collections as veritable resources”

The release added that part of the activities lined up for the celebration in Owerri includes a public lecture based on the theme of the Museum Day by Dr. (Mrs) Carolyn N. Ezeokeke, (Former Director, Department of Educational Services and Training, NCMM, Abuja); an Art Exhibition to be declared open by Mazi (Dr) Uche Ohia, the Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Creative Arts, Imo State and Award presentation to deserving personalities.

The programme is scheduled for 10.00 am at the premises of the National Museum, Owerri, opposite Federal University Teaching Hospital, (Former FMC), Owerri.

Members of the public, academia, cooperate bodies, and nongovernmental agencies are invited to rally support for the National Commission for Museums and Monuments to achieve its laudable objectives which are anchored on the systematic collection, preservation, study, and interpretation of material evidence (tangible and intangible) to the development of the people of Nigeria and the world at large.
