Maputo Protocol Domestication: Imo NUJ Partners AFA

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Imo state Council, has expressed its determination to partner relevant organizations in the state to ensure adequate sensitization and protection of women’s rights by supporting the full domestication of Maputo Protocol.

State Chairman of the Council, Comr. Ifeanyi Nwanguma, made this pledge during a courtesy call on him at the council’s Secretariat in Owerri, by the Alliances for Africa (AFA), a women-led non-governmental organization committed to the promotion of human rights, peace, and sustainable development.

While describing women as the indispensable pillars of any given society, Comr. Nwanguma called for concerted efforts from relevant organizations and the government to ensure that women are protected and given rights due to them.

Earlier, leader of the group, Ifeoma Obinwa, who is also the Programme Officer, Alliances for Africa (AFA), said the group, in partnership with other organizations plans to implement a regional project aimed at the domestication of the Maputo Protocol, which guarantees comprehensive rights to women and girls in Nigeria.

The group further called on the NUJ in the state to assist in driving massive media awareness campaigns in order to educate, sensitize and promote the Maputo Protocol to the general public and demand its domestication.
