FedPoly Nekede’s Students Week Ends With Rag Day, People’s Opinion (Full Gist)

It was another colourful day around town on Friday 23, 2019 as Students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri joyfully participated in their annual ‘Rag Day’ exercise which marks the end of the ‘Students Week’ powered and organised by the Student Union Government and Dean Student Affairs of the institution.

In the wake of the ‘Ragging exercise’, News Corner Crew monitored the conduct in Owerri metropolis to sample peoples opinion and reactions from the students as well as residents of the school’s vicinity on the exercise which is not particular with Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri but a tradition of almost all Nigerian institutions.

Speaking to our correspondents, a non-academic staff in the Department of Computer Science, Mr Hycinth Ikwuoma said “It is a time when students seek for alms to support their academic struggles”.

Mr Ikwuoma noted that the students did not just dress and act in awkward manners during rag days out of frustration or bad living but for the fun and experience as a student as well as out of need in some cases but urged the public to assist them in possible ways they can when they are approached.

A ‘Rag Day Tin’ Seller, Mrs Ogechi Young, who gets paid to pimp clowns told News Corner that she makes the designing of the Tin for the ragging students during Student Weeks to save them time of fetching the tins in far away disposed places.

Mrs Ogechi said that the design and production of the Rag Day stickers adds to their weekly sales and profit whenever the students engage in the exercise.

She wished the students well and prayed God to guard and see them through their academic pursuit which is the reason for all celebration.

One of the interviewed students, Joy Udodiri expressed joy participating in the long dreamt exercise as a new student of the renowned institution- Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri.

She said, “It is fun and fun all through as people look at my friends who needs I with amusement of our funny outlooks and as well render some monetary assistance with smiles”, Miss Joy added.

“Some people saw and welcomed us as clowns and we are happy to at least make them smile for minutes which will go a long way alleviating their stress at the market and work places.”

Another ragging student, Precious Ezekwem from the Department of Business Administration said Rag Day is an opportunity not only to have fun but to show and tell people that one is in school and needs support for the mighty journey of acquiring more knowledge.

“Rag Day authenticates studentship just as Matriculation does because some relatives wants to see and confirm for themselves. It shows that you are truly a student and ambassador of your school and not ashamed of it in any way”.

Visibly, students Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri in their numbers were seen across Imo state and environs going about their Rag Days in good conduct and the general public was very happy to welcome their smiling and friendly faces with high sense of courtesy.

The public as gathered by News Corner Crew were of the views that the students of the institution were properly guided not to have taken the opportunity to dress immorally.
