EGOGA Alumni Association Performs Groundbreaking Ceremony For Modern Domitory

Ahead of its 3rd Global Reunion, Egbu Girls Old Girls Association has done a groundbreaking ceremony to build the first phase of its over 300 million modern dormitory for its school.

This was contained in a release signed by Ugonma Cokey,the global Public Relations Officer of EGOGA.

The ceremony was conducted by the Rt. Rev Bishop Geoffrey Okorafor, who is also the proprietor of the school.

The ceremony was witnessed by some executive members of the association, including, Lady Barrister Stella Amamasi, Hon Justice Vicky Isiguzo, Barr. Ethel Echebima.  Others are Dame Irene Duru and Lady Kalaya Opara, the principal who is also an old girl, her staff, and some staff and students of the school.

The building of the modern dormitory is part of the Association’s way of giving back to the school. It is also to ensure better security, accommodation, and environment for the students and to encourage more students to become borders.

According to the global President Mrs Ijeoma Enekwa, “If inspite of the dilapidated buildings, the students still win international competitions, there’s no telling what they will do with good dormitories, environment and ambience.

At its 2nd reunion, when it celebrated 60 years of the school, the Association produced a compendium to raise money for the dormitory. EGOGA also did a survey of the dormitory compound

Ahead of its first reunion, the group did a perimeter fencing of the dormitory area, to secure the girls. Individuals built a signage and gate, as well as wash bathrooms and toilets, Class sets built a kitchen, bought lab equipment, mattresses, and water tanks and chapters donated as notebooks and other materials.

A few months ago, the North American Chapter of the Association renovated a classroom block. Plans are underway to equip the classes.

The Association hopes to raise more money before and at the reunion to help with the completion of the dormitory before embarking on the 2nd phase.

“Individuals can take up the building of a Chalet and brand it in their name or the name of a family member.” Mrs Enekwa said.

The 3rd global reunion is scheduled for between the 18th and 21st of December.

The global reunion, which holds every 3 years, features the Winifed Hubbard lectures. The lecture was instituted in honour of Winifred Hubbard, the school’s first principal.

The theme for this year’s reunion is Mentorship For Girl Child Safety And Empowerment.

Members of the Association include the first female stockbroker in Nigeria, Mrs Lizzy Ebi, the publisher of The Source Magazine, Dame Comfort Obi, the former first lady of Ondo State, H.E, Mrs Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, Hon. Justice Vicky Ishigugo and other notable figures from all works of life, both home and in the diaspora.
