Sexual Harassment Saga: Rights Activist, Chika Uju, Calls For Quick Release Of Detained Female Soldier
By Our Reporter…
A human rights activist and a journalist of note, Amb. Lady Chika Uju, has joined other rights activists across board such as Civil Rights Realisation And Advancement Network (CRRAN) and Rule of Law And Accountability Advocacy Center (RULAAC). to call for quick release from detention of a female soldier, Corporal Ruth Ogunleye, who accused Army Oficers of sexually harassing her and other helpless female soldiers in the Armed Forces.
Uju, who made the call in a chat with journalists on Tuesday, strongly condemned the unwarranted detention of Corporal Ruth Ogunleye.
She said it is quite unlawful to detain the female soldier for voicing out an alleged evil against her and other female soldiers in the Armed Forces by Officers superior to them without due investigation by the appropriate channel, stressing that the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria should be fully maintained to avoid tampering on human rights and justice.
“I, Amb. Lady Chika Uju, a journalist and human rights crusader, I condemn in strong terms, the unlawful detention of a female soldier, Corporal Ruth Ogunleye, by the Military Police, for accusing Superior Officers of the Armed Forces, of harassing her sexually”, she maintained.
It could be recalled that the Army Spokesman, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, had stated that the female soldier had not officially exhausted the available institutionalized channels before going on the social media.
Thus, she called on the Attorney General of the Federation to rightly guide the Nigerian Army authorities by bringing to their attention the current and correct position of relevant applicable laws as enunciated by the court of Appeal and ensure the immediate release of the detained soldier and thereafter investigate the substance of the complaint which is sexual harassment of the person of Corporal Ruth Ogunleye by the said superior officers.
