Robotic Assisted Surgery Launched in Imo …assures citizens, N15,000 annual insurance health care of the service

Robot Assisted Surgery has been launched in Imo, by The Prostate Clinic (TPC), a private owned establishment that specializes on robotic and laparoscopic surgery, located at Imo Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

Robot Assisted Surgery, an advanced type of minimally invasive operation, where computer controlled robotic system maneuver tiny tools through small cuts giving them greater precision, flexibility and a 3D view than standard methods.

Speaking to the newsmen, during the flag off ceremony, when the first operation was carried out, the Medical Director of The Prostate Clinic, Prof Kingsley Ekwueme, described the operation as a ” complete success”. He noted the benefits of robotic assisted surgery, which includes, less pain, faster recovery, lower infections risk, reduced blood loss, and shorter hospital stay.

Prof Ekwueme who is a United Kingdom based Consultant Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgeon, also said, the technology enables surgeons to remove cancerous tissues while preserving vital functions.

His words, “the success rate of robotic surgery for cancer is phenomenal. Patients should not have to suffer prolonged loss of sexual function after prostate surgery”.

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, who witnessed the event, informed that, the establishment will serve not only as a treatment center, but will also promote early detection and prevention through frequent medical checks – ups. He further disclosed that the facility operates under a Public Private Partnership (PPP), funded majorly by the private sector, which according to him (governor), would help guarantee it’s sustainability and quality management.

Governor Uzodimma, advised citizens to enroll in Imo State Health Insurance Scheme for affordable and accessibility of the service.

Other dignitaries present during the event are, Commissioner for Health, Dr Mrs Chioma Egu, Hon Enyinnaya Onuegbu, among others.
