OneDosh Ignites Imo Unity Cup as Eight Tertiary Institutions Gear Up for Football Showdown
The battle lines have been drawn for what promises to be a thrilling celebration of football, youth development and campus rivalry as the maiden edition of the Imo Unity Cup 2026, powered by global fintech company OneDosh, kicks off on Wednesday, July 1, at the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Mini Stadium, Owerri.
With eight tertiary institutions preparing to take centre stage in a tournament designed to uncover hidden talents and strengthen bonds among students across the state, excitement is already building for a competition many believe could redefine inter-campus football in Imo State.

Far beyond the chase for trophies and prize money, the Imo Unity Cup is positioned as a platform to discover the next generation of football stars while promoting unity, friendship and healthy competition among young people. For many of the players set to grace the pitch, the tournament represents an opportunity to step into the spotlight, announce themselves and possibly open the door to bigger opportunities in the game.
Speaking on the company’s partnership with the championship, OneDosh Marketing Lead, Miss Cindi Oba, described the sponsorship as a reflection of the company’s commitment to creating opportunities and connecting people beyond borders.
According to her, OneDosh is transforming cross-border transactions by enabling users to spend, send and convert money instantly through innovative stablecoin technology, eliminating many of the delays and limitations associated with traditional financial systems.
She noted that supporting youth sports aligns perfectly with the company’s vision of improving lives through innovation and investing in initiatives capable of creating lasting impact in communities.

The Tournament Coordinator, Engr. Ugochukwu Egbonine, said OneDosh identified with the competition because of its strong focus on youth empowerment and community development.
According to him, tertiary institutions across Imo State are home to immense football talent waiting for the right platform to flourish, adding that the Imo Unity Cup provides student-athletes with the opportunity to compete, develop and attract life-changing opportunities.
He expressed confidence that the competition would not only produce champions but also serve as a launch pad for future stars capable of progressing to greater heights in the game.

Representing the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, at the unveiling ceremony, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr. G.O.C. Nwadike, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to grassroots sports development and youth engagement through competitive sporting activities.
Nwadike disclosed that eight tertiary institutions will battle for honours in what is expected to become one of the state’s premier inter-tertiary football competitions.

The participating institutions include Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Imo State University, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State Polytechnic, Omuma, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo, Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University, Ideato, and the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Owerri.
Host institution Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education will have the honour of kicking off the tournament when they take on the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences on Wednesday, July 1, at 2:00 p.m. in the opening fixture at the Alvan Mini Stadium.

The action continues on July 2 as Imo State University lock horns with Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University before Federal University of Technology Owerri square off against Imo State Polytechnic on July 3. The opening round will be rounded off on July 4 with Federal College of Land Resources Technology taking on Federal Polytechnic Nekede in another high-stakes encounter.
With knockout football leaving no room for error, winners of Matches A and C will clash in the first semifinal, while victors from Matches B and D will battle for the second ticket to the final ahead of the grand finale slated for Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

The stakes are equally high off the pitch, with the eventual champions set to cart home a winner’s prize of ₦1 million, while the runners-up and third-placed teams will receive ₦750,000 and ₦500,000 respectively.
Individual brilliance will also come under the spotlight, with cash rewards of ₦100,000 each awaiting the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer and Best Goalkeeper.
As the countdown reaches its final hours, anticipation continues to build across campuses and among football enthusiasts eager to witness the birth of a new tradition in Imo sports.
When the first whistle sounds in Owerri on July 1, the race for glory will officially begin, dreams will be put to the test and eight institutions will embark on a journey to write their names into history as the inaugural champions of the Imo Unity Cup.
