The battle lines have been drawn for what promises to be a thrilling celebration of football, youth development and campus rivalry as the maiden edition of the Imo Unity Cup 2026, powered by global fintech company OneDosh, kicks off on Wednesday, July 1, at the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Mini Stadium, Owerri.

With eight tertiary institutions preparing to take centre stage in a tournament designed to uncover hidden talents and strengthen bonds among students across the state, excitement is already building for a competition many believe could redefine inter-campus football in Imo State.

Far beyond the chase for trophies and prize money, the Imo Unity Cup is positioned as a platform to discover the next generation of football stars while promoting unity, friendship and healthy competition among young people. For many of the players set to grace the pitch, the tournament represents an opportunity to step into the spotlight, announce themselves and possibly open the door to bigger opportunities in the game.

Speaking on the company’s partnership with the championship, OneDosh Marketing Lead, Miss Cindi Oba, described the sponsorship as a reflection of the company’s commitment to creating opportunities and connecting people beyond borders.

According to her, OneDosh is transforming cross-border transactions by enabling users to spend, send and convert money instantly through innovative stablecoin technology, eliminating many of the delays and limitations associated with traditional financial systems.

According to him, tertiary institutions across Imo State are home to immense football talent waiting for the right platform to flourish, adding that the Imo Unity Cup provides student-athletes with the opportunity to compete, develop and attract life-changing opportunities.

He expressed confidence that the competition would not only produce champions but also serve as a launch pad for future stars capable of progressing to greater heights in the game.

Representing the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, at the unveiling ceremony, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr. G.O.C. Nwadike, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to grassroots sports development and youth engagement through competitive sporting activities.

Nwadike disclosed that eight tertiary institutions will battle for honours in what is expected to become one of the state’s premier inter-tertiary football competitions.
