Insecurity: “Lives of Federal Polytechnic Students” Matters

By Leeyoung
Now that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has suspended their bimonth strike, the students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri Imo State will soon be returning from different parts of the country down here to the present Somalia of South East Nigeria.
In a time like this, Imo state is facing the highest ratio of insecurity in SouthEast and we have been witnessing countless extrajudicial killings by the police and military…. that around the month of MAY, upto four (4) or more students were killed by the military and the cause remain UNKNOWN.
It has become very worrisome to note that Federal Polytechnic Nekede is surrounded by the 211 AIR FORCE base at Naze Junction; the NAVY LIAISON OFFICE at Akachi junction and NEKEDE/DIVISIONAL Police Station at Umuoma Nekede, knowing how the POLICE and Military personnel has been unjustifiably HARASSING, INTIMIDATING and KILLING Innocent youths MOSTLY STUDENTS in the name of fighting UNKNOWN GUNMEN.

On the side of Nekede Divisional police station, they are fond of arresting students mostly ONE WEEK to their EXAMS, let there be no repetition of those unwarranted and illegal arrests during examination periods.
I plead and urge the MANAGEMENT of Federal Polytechnic Nekede to visit and have one-on-one talk with those in charge of the above mentioned security agencies or outfit to talk to them on behalf of the POLYNEK students.
On the side of the police, after meeting with DPO of Nekede/ Ihiagwa, let them also meet the Imo State COMMISSIONER of police and plead with them to talk to his men to save the lives of the students of the aforementioned institution because the will be coming back from far and near.
We are in a country were those who are suppose to protect us are killing us to the extent that nowadays if one sees armed robbers, one runs to them, while on seeing the military or police fear grips to the bone marrow.
Students also should as a matter of seriousness restrict themselves from wandering about unnecessarily. Once it is 6:30. Preferably, after lectures, go straight to your lodge or hostel.
