GOMEP-NG President Urges FG to Recognize Online Media’s Lead in News Dissemination
The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has urged the Federal Government to accord greater recognition and support to online media practitioners, saying digital journalism has become the nation’s fastest and most influential platform for news dissemination.
The National President of GOMEP-NG, Comr. Akpovoke Otiti, and the National Secretary, Comr. Clinton Uba, in statement both signed that the rapid growth of online media has significantly transformed the way Nigerians consume information, with millions of citizens now relying on digital platforms for real time news and public affairs.
According to him, traditional media platforms, including newspapers, radio, and television, continue to play important roles but are increasingly complemented by online news outlets, which provide immediate access to information and wider audience engagement through social media.
Otiti noted that the guild comprises over 270 online media editors and publishers spread across Nigeria, describing its members as grassroots information managers committed to promoting credible journalism, public enlightenment, and national development.
He called on relevant government agencies and stakeholders to engage more actively with online media organisations in policy communication, public awareness campaigns, and developmental initiatives, stressing that digital platforms have become indispensable in reaching diverse audiences across the country.
The GOMEP-NG president reaffirmed the association’s commitment to ethical journalism, professionalism, and responsible information dissemination, while expressing its readiness to partner with government and private institutions in advancing good governance, transparency, and sustainable national development.
