The Union gave the advice in a press release signed by the State Council Chairman, Comrade Chris Akaraonye recently.
Imo NUJ urged the residents to always observe personal hygiene and social distancing as well as obey government safety instructions to help prevent any incidence of infection in the state, noting that Imo government has shown commendable commitment so far.
“We commend the bold steps already taken by the Governor Hope Uzodinma’s administration, especially, the setting up of Committee for Prevention of Corona Virus with Prof Maurice Iwu as Chairman”
“We are also happy with the decision to close down the markets and schools among other measures”
Imo NUJ in the release call on the state government to take further proactive steps to ensure compliance with expert advice and government orders by Imo residents as there is no case already reported in the state.
“We believe that with carefully focused planning and execution of strategies there will not be any incidence in Imo”
According to the release, Imo NUJ said its members (Journalists) are ever ready to keep carrying out our duties of informing and educating the public.
“We urge the government to always carry the Union and journalists in the state along in the efforts to contain the Corona Virus pandemic”
The NUJ urge restraint in peddling unfounded rumours and dishing out of unconfirmed information especially through the social media.
“Imo residents should be courageous and not live in fear but always be safety conscious. It is our belief that together, we shall overcome this pandemic”
