The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, has been upgraded to a University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) Owerri status by the APC led federal government.
The official inauguration ceremony of the institution was performed by the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, on Friday, amid fanfare.
Uzodimma said the feat was a reality as FUTH Owerri has come to stay, having been realized by the collaborative efforts of the Federal and Imo State governments, noting that FUTH Owerri would improve lives of people in the state through offering quality and affordable health services.
Thus, in his address earlier, the Acting Chief Medical Director of FUTH Owerri, Doctor Kingsley Achigbu, disclosed that the upgrade of FMC by the federal government to FUTH was historic, a feat he stressed would not only generate employment for people across board, but would enhance development in the state.
Achigbu who pointed out that the institution has solid physical infrastructures, qualified medical personnel, quality equipments and facilities to get along, observed that there are many vital courses such as medicine, community medicine, surgery, among courses being studied or offered in the university.
He emphasized that FUTH Owerri will supervise Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH) Orlu, College of Nursing/Midwifery Orlu and Amaigbo and other health institutions in Imo State.
Stating that the university needs more space for expansion, Achigbu called on federal/state government to provide more structures, infrastructures, equipments, facilities, as well as other interventions to enhance quality education and healthcare services.
Therefore, he commended the political sagacity of Governor Hope Uzodimma that made the upgrading of FMC Owerri to FUTH Owerri feasible. He also eulogized the Minister for Health and others for their efforts to the success of the inaugural ceremony.
