​A Covenant of Vision and Transformation

​When Dr. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe stepped into office on September 10, 2024, as the 9th Substantive Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, she articulated a clear covenant with the institution: an 11-Point Visionary Agenda anchored on Academic Excellence, Infrastructure Renewal, Student Welfare, Institutional Security, and Digital Transformation.

​Two years into her single five-year tenure, that visionary mandate, popularly described across campus as the “Era of Grace and Innovation”, has yielded remarkable, measurable milestones that have elevated the institution’s national footprint.

​Gathered at the institution’s 1, 000-Capacity Auditorium at 9: 00 AM on Thursday, September 10, 2026, for a solemn assembly and thanksgiving service themed “Celebrating God’s Faithfulness,” staff, students, management, and external partners witnessed a double celebration marking her birthday and second anniversary in office.

The solemn assembly featured a spiritual ministeration by the guest minister, Pastor Paschal Udah, who ministered to the polytechnic community, offering prayers of thanksgiving for the rector’s leadership and the institution’s growth.

During the event, the official Two-Year Chronicles documentary was unveiled alongside her two-year scorecard themed “Documenting Impact, Celebrating Milestones, Building a Stronger Future.” The visual showcase captured a complete structural and academic overhaul across every arm of the Polytechnic.

​ Agrarian Revolution and Mass Student Housing

​Among the headline achievements announced during the anniversary presentation is the newly awarded Agricultural Commercial Farms project for 2026. Designed to scale up technical skills acquisition and boost internal revenue generation, the commercial farm initiative stands alongside reactivated industrial enterprises, including the institution’s automated Tissue Paper Factory, Block Industry, and Bottled Water Plant, to establish a self-sustaining financial framework for the Polytechnic.

​To address long-standing student accommodation deficits, the administration secured Federal Ministry of Finance PPP approval for a modern 1, 200-bed space student hostel project. This initiative complements completed TETFund renovations of Hostel A (Jumbo Hostel), Hostel B, and Hostel E, converting housing facilities into standardized, self-contained living spaces that have driven campus residential capacity from 38 percent to over 71 percent.

​ Illuminating the Campus: Energy and Structural Renewal

​Under the administration’s “Light Up Nekede” project, safety and night-time campus life have undergone a complete reversal. The institution successfully secured and deployed 466 stands of solar streetlights from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), alongside extensive solar grid installations across the Rectory, Registry, Bursary, Medical Centre, SIWES/IPC Directorate, and multiple school complexes.

​Concurrently, a strategic integration with the Orashi Electricity Project grid has restored steady public power supply across academic faculties, including the School of Business and Management Studies (SBMT) and the School of Engineering Design and Technology (SEDT), ending multi-year outages.

​Key structural overhauls completed over the past 24 months include:

• ​Full renovation of the 1, 000-Capacity Central Auditorium.

• ​Modernization of the 500-Capacity Engineering Theatre and 500-Capacity Humanities Theatre.

• ​Construction of new office complexes for the School of Information & Communication Technology (SICT) and the School of General Studies (SGS).

• ​Ongoing construction of a two-storey Modern Medical Complex & Diagnostic Centre and Poly Junction/Umuerim dual-carriage access roads.

​ Academic Expansion and the Digital Revolution

​Dr. Igbokwe’s tenure has aggressively prioritized modern curriculum design and digital integration. Guided by the institution’s core mandate, “Knowledge & Skill for Service,” the Polytechnic secured National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) approval to commence the HND Pharmaceutical Technology program and introduced accredited Chinese Language instruction complete with a dedicated, fully furnished learning complex.

​Digital governance has reshaped administrative and academic workflows:

• ​CBT & Assessment: Deployed computer-based test continuous assessment (CBT CAT) models and biometric-authenticated examinations across all departments.

• ​Digital Identity: Issued mandatory QR-code-enabled Digital ID cards for staff and students, simplifying identity management and academic verification.

• ​SIWES Automation: Created a fully digitalized SIWES Portal and automated certification pipeline, directly accelerating NYSC mobilization.

• ​NYSC Backlog Clearance: Processed and cleared over 80 percent of a backlogged 50, 000 prospective corps member dataset, enabling thousands of graduates to participate in national service.

​In technology infrastructure, the Polytechnic partnered with Renaissance Africa, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), and Megastar Technical Construction Company to flag off a state-of-the-art ICT Hub and Engineering Studio equipped with modern computing infrastructure and stable power systems.

​ Faculty Growth, Grants, and Strategic Alliances

​Investments in human capital have yielded national research recognition. The administration facilitated TETFund sponsorships for 21 academic staff pursuing M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees, alongside sponsoring 60 teaching and non-teaching personnel to international and local conferences. Research capacity surged as the Polytechnic secured TETFund National Research Fund (NRF) competitive grants and launched the indexed International Journal of Research, Innovation and Development.

​External philanthropic partnerships have brought direct support to students:

• ​Tampa Bay Diaspora Grant: Secured ₦3 Million in direct undergraduate scholarships and a ₦15 Million+ outdoor social event stage from the Imo Community of Tampa Bay, Florida.

• ​Private Sector Support: Attracted tuition scholarship schemes from OPAY, Fintech Bank, and Dr. Paschal Chibuike Okechukwu (Cubana Chief Priest), who committed to covering tuition fees for 1, 000 students alongside vehicle donations for SUG administration.

• ​Technical Training: Sealed a strategic technical partnership with Innoson Motors’ Kiara Academy for specialized practical technology modules.

​ Sanitizing the Academic Ecosystem

​Integrity remains the cornerstone of the administration’s operational policy. Dr. Igbokwe established an unyielding stance against academic corruption, harassment, sorting, and extortion. Following campus-wide town halls with student representatives, the administration deployed anonymous reporting channels, introduced point-of-sale (POS) systems across revenue channels to prevent cash leakages, and extended total protection to whistleblowers.

Through fiscal transparency, academic expansion, and aggressive infrastructural upgrades, the Rector’s two-year milestone establishes a durable foundation for positioning Nekede as Sub-Saharan Africa’s premier TVET destination.
