Super Eagles goal-keeping Challenges ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifying matches

From John Nwogu, Owerri.

The Super Eagles goal-keeping ahead of the crucial 2018 World Cup qualifying matches against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun next month has remained a source of concern not only to the team’s Technical Adviser but to all soccer loving Nigerians.

A renowned Sports  Analyst, correspondent and immediate past Chairman of IMO SWAN, John Nwaogu went down town to capture the views of some Sports enthusiasts and administrators on the way forward.

According to him, an Ex-International Mr. Evans Uzokwe expressed regret over the health condition of Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme who was diagnosed with acute Leukaemia and urged the Nigeria football Federation NFF to shop for a good replacement.

He noted that Daniel Akpeyi was not in form in the match against South Africa in Uyo last month adding that if the Super Eagles play the way they did against South Africa in their match against Cameroun, Nigeria should expect a disappointing result.

Mr. Uzokwe who was a former Head of Service stated that the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun despite finishing poorly at the FIFA Confederation Cup in Russia were very purposeful in their matches as well as showed commitment.

He was however quick to add that a good defence could provide cover for whoever is in goal for the Super Eagles.

A Sports Philanthropist and State Head of Service, Mr. Callistus Ekenze in his

reaction observed that the Super Eagles goalkeeping is an area the team has serious challenges especially now that the country wants to pick the Sole ticket in group for the 2018 World cup.

He noted that Akpeyi was very fragile in the match against South Africa and advised the NFF to fortify the defence in the match against Cameroun while the mid field should be loaded with players who can hold the ball so as to reduce pressure on the defence.

Mr. Ekenze also advised the NFF to mount pressure on Vincent Enyeama to come back home and keep for the country.

Furthermore, a Sports enthusiast, Sir Evans Eziohuru said his  morale was low following the news of Carl Ikeme’s illness and prayed for his quick recovery.

He said Ikeme had always shown ability, agility, and high level of confidence while in goal for Super Eagles.

Sir Evans said it was too late to pick a goalkeeper from the domestic league and advised that the football officials should go for Vincent Enyeama.

Nigeria is topping group B with six points in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers while Cameroun is placed second in the group with two points.

If the Super Eagles wins the first leg match against Cameroun in Uyo on the 31st of next month, the hope of qualifying for the 2018 World cup will be assured.
