In his presentation of a paper entitled “The role of Science Laboratory Technology in Environmental pollution monitoring,” at the inaugural lecture of Imo Polytechnic, Omuma, Imo state last week which was also the marking of one year in his office, Professor Stephen Kanayo Chukwuka -the Rector of Imo Polytechnic, Omuma, while stating that human activity and natural catastrophes are posing danger to Nigeria’s environment as a result of their exploration of natural resources like land, air and water on which all lives depend on, the renowned academic would not mince words to say that there are already some issues with the environment and obvious scars that are being noticed and more, that the Country is currently witnessing serious environmental deterioration resulting from its high population which led to urbanization.
Professor Chukwuka said that having different kinds of pollution which he said range from air pollution to water and soil pollution, its monitoring would aim at regulating and mitigating the environmental implications of an organisation’s operations either to ensure that laws and regulations are followed or to link the possibility of harmful environmental effects and protect public health.
Professor Chukwuka stressed that the purpose of an environmental monitoring method or procedure is to learn about the levels of dangerous pollutants in the atmosphere and their consequences on environment, human life, animals and trees and that data gathered from the environmental monitoring techniques can be utilized to forecast problems.
He urged the government to see that laws are promulgated to protect the environments.
The Rector commended Senator Hope Uzodimma, the governor of Imo state for his ceaseless interventions to put life into academic institution citing the road construction across the Polytechnic and the construction of many more buildings on the campus.
He called for a payback to the good gestures of the Governor.
The event was well attended by personalities among which include Prof. JohnCliff Nwadike -the commissioner for Education and a host of others from different quarters.
