ALGON Outplays IMHA in Novelty Match as Imo @ 50 Celebrations Hit Crescendo
ThankGod Emeh…
As part of the golden jubilee celebration of Imo State, football once again proved its timeless power to unite, inspire and entertain, as the Association of Local Government Chairmen (ALGON) on Friday, February 6, locked horns with members of the Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) in a colourful novelty match at the iconic Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
The historic encounter, staged to commemorate Imo State’s 50 years of existence, brought governance and sports together in a refreshing blend, with players on both sides showcasing footballing skills that went far beyond their known administrative and legislative prowess.
The novelty match was officially kicked off by the Executive Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, who graced the occasion alongside a distinguished array of political leaders, government officials, sports administrators and eminent personalities from across the state whose presence further amplified the joy and significance of the golden jubilee celebration.

With a trophy at stake, the novelty fixture went beyond recreation as it was designed to highlight the state’s commitment to grassroots sports development while providing a platform for relaxation, interaction and healthy competition among sports enthusiasts and policymakers alike.
Action on the pitch lived up to the ceremonial expectations, and midway into the first half, the ALGON team broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal that sent cheers across the stands and placed the executive chairmen firmly in control of the encounter.
Despite spirited efforts and a series of high-powered attempts by the IMHA team to restore parity, the lawmakers were unable to reconcile their missed chances with the back of the net, as ALGON side held firm till the final whistle, emerging victorious in a match that was both entertaining and symbolic.
Beyond the scoreline, the game offered honourable members and local government chairmen a rare opportunity to unwind from the pressures of governance, strengthen social bonds and deepen networks critical to the future development of the state across all sectors.

Imolites equally seized the moment, engaging freely with their local council representatives who, on the pitch, proudly represented not just their offices but their respective local governments of origin — a gesture that resonated strongly with the crowd.
The celebration reached an even more thrilling height as the Heartland Bikers staged a spectacular ride parade around the pitch, dazzling spectators with their skills and precision.
The bikers also heralded the grand finale of the Imo @ 50 celebrations, in a road across Owerri, Okigwe and Orlu geopolitical zones of the state.
Indeed, the novelty match was more than just football; it was a celebration of unity, heritage, sportsmanship and the enduring spirit of Imo State at 50.
