Strike: Major Businesses Shut Down in Kaduna

Major business activities in Kaduna State have been grounded in compliance with the Nigeria Labour Congress strike which commenced today.

Reports within the metropolis reveal that, all the banks on Yakubu Gowon way were closed down.

Majority of residents were seen queuing to retrieve money from the ATM while the major markets within the metropolis Gumi, Vetinary and Chechenya were partially opened, the market gates were opened but majority of shops were closed.

Some retailers who sell provisions and other perishable items were seen outside the market selling household items.

Radio Nigeria also reports that, all the telecommunication companies were closed. “MTN, GLO and AIRTEL offices with many people seen around the premises trying to gain access.

In compliance with the strike, majority of the fuel stations within the metropolis were all shut down. “The

Airport had also issued a statement on closing its activities due to directives by the NLC”.

Other places that were also locked up by the NLC include the State Secretariat, Kaduna State University, Ministries and many Goverment agencies.

However, people were seen going about their businesses and there was also presence of normal vehicular activities. Public transport owners also plied their normal routes conveying passengers to their various destinations.

On the part of the government, about eight Police vans, ‘Operation Yaki Vans’, conveying Policemen were sighted at the State Secretariat and Ministry for local Government and Chieftancy Affairs breaking down the locks put by the NLC in order to grant civil servants access to their various offices.

There were heavy presence of security personnel around Government offices that were locked up by the NLC.
